Guard Alert is a personal security alert system that lets you notify local authorities if you are in a dangerous situation. By pushing the help button on the safety app or on the safety remote, police can send help to your exact location.
One challenge was to restructure and simplify the onboarding experience of the mobile app. The other challenge was to promote situational awareness by adding crime area notifications and safety awareness features.
We wanted to learn more about similar products in the market so we did a competitive analysis. We wanted to see what features were highlighted for each as well as what users thought of the products and the usability.
Using both our research insights and competitive analysis I created user personas that would guide me through the onboarding development. I also created some scenarios with these user personas to see how they would potentially interact with app.
After completing user interviews I laid out my insights using an affinty map. This allowed me to categorize main areas of focus. The biggest catergories were neighborhood awareness, self defense knowledge, easy and quick access to the app when in danger. This helped me move forward in the direction of incorporating a crime area heat map feature, as well as safety quiz and tips feature. We also simplified the onboarding experience to help with the ease of using the app.
Our design principles were to keep the app quick and easy to use and give users the tools they need to be preventative. Another principle was to inform and educate users on personal safety promote situational awareness.
As part of simplifying the onboarding experience I created a task flow. Within this task flow I was able to group similar steps together. I was also able to see the onboarding experience as a whole and evaluate how each step relates to the process.
I created several iterations of the wireframes. Below are the final wireframes based of off the user tests we conducted. After final presentation to the client, they chose to move forward with this onboarding idea.
